Reese Witherspoon has said that is unfortunate that she was treated better in the public eye than stars like Britney Spears.
In a wide-ranging interview with Time Magazine, Reese Witherspoon said that she feels “lucky” to have been labeled one of Hollywood’s “good” girls and thus got away with a lot of embarrassing moments — like screaming at the paparazzi. On the other hand, stars like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were labelled “bad” during the height of their fame and were often picked apart because of their partying lifestyles.
“What if the media had decided I was something else?” said Witherspoon, 45, in the interview. “I would be in a totally different position.”
“I want to say it’s my decisions or the career choices I made, but it felt very arbitrary. And kind of sh***y”, reflected Witherspoon.
Apart from a few videos of Reese screaming at the paparazzi, the actor said she was lucky that the media “never stuck” her shortcomings with her reputation. While she was followed around by the shutterbugs at places like the church or schools, Spears was vilified for everything she did. Moreover, Britney’s infamous dance for the 2001 MTV Awards on her single titled I’m a snake 4 U lead to a rather sexualized portrayal of the actor.
Spears and Witherspoon are often compared because of their supposed similar experiences. Both celebrities rose to fame in 1999 as Reese debuted with her role in the Election, while Britney released her album Baby One More Time. Then the two had their teenage stardom transitioning to adult fame in 2001 as Reese made it big with her role in Legally Blonde and Britney smashed the top charts with her third studio album which included songs like Overprotected.
Unbelievably, both women also married young and then went through very public divorces in the early 2000s — Witherspoon to fellow actor Ryan Phillippe and Spears to Kevin Federline. Witherspoon and Phillippe divorced in 2007 and are parents to 21-year-old daughter Ava and 17-year-old son Deacon. Spears and Federline also divorced in 2007 and share sons Sean, 15, and Jayden, 14.
