Actor Azfar Rehman has opted out of his participation in the 2022 HUM Awards in Canada to express solidarity with the flood victims in Pakistan. The Aatish star posted the news on Instagram on Friday.
He said he has withdrawn “by choice with due respect to the coveted event”.
“Sorry to disappoint my fans in Toronto Canada, I shall not be attending the HUM Awards this year even though I’m nominated in the best actor in a negative role category. I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters drowning in the floods. I request the authority at the awards to kindly donate my ticket and stay money to the flood relief,” he wrote, adding the hashtag Pakistan Zindabad.
Celebrities like Ayesha Omar, Mehwish Hayat, Nadia Afgan, Ali Kazmi, Sadaf Kanwal and Shagufta Ejaz praised Rehman for his stance.
The award show is currently being scrutinised on social media for its timing.
Even senior politician Sharmila Faruqi recently schooled local celebrities (with the noted exception of Hadiqa Kiani) for not doing enough for flood relief. In an Instagram post, she shared pictures of several celebrities in Canada for the Hum TV Awards, along with an image of Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie in Pakistan.
However, according to the award show orgnaisers, they will donate a significant margin of their profits to the flood victims.
The makers even hosted a fundraiser in Toronto on Friday. The event was attended by industry bigwigs like Mahira Khan, Bilal Ashraf, and Urwa Hocane.
On the work front, Azfar was last seen in ARY Digital’s drama Angna opposite Areeba Habib.
