The song ‘Besharam Rang’ (roughly translates to shameless colour) from the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan movie ‘Pathaan’ has garnered controversy since its release. Now India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has advised the makers of the film to implement changes to the song.
Since the song’s release, costumes worn in the music video have been the subject of criticism, with certain Hindu clerics stating that the lyrics are an insult to their religion. Narottam Mishra, a minister from the state of Madhya Pradesh, held a press conference on December 14 about the costumes in the music video, calling them insulting to Hindu practices, and warned the makers of the movie that ‘Pathaan’ would be banned in the state on its release.
‘Pathaan’ was submitted by Yash Raj Film to the CBFC for a certification prior to being shown in cinemas. On Thursday, the chairman Prasoon Joshi released a statement requesting the makers to implement changes in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ to prevent controversy. The full statement read:
“‘Pathaan’ went through the due and thorough examining process as per the CBFC guidelines. The committee has guided the makers to implement the advised changes in the film including the songs and submit the revised version prior to theatrical release. CBFC is always committed to find the right balance between creative expression and sensibility of the audience and believe that we can always find solution through meaningful dialogue between all stakeholders. Whilst the process is getting duly followed and implemented, I must reiterate that our culture and faith is glorious, intricate, and nuanced. And we have to be careful that it does not get defined by trivia which takes the focus away from the real and the true. And like I have said earlier as well, that the trust between creators and audience is most important to protect and the creators should keep working towards it.”
Minister Mishra appreciated CBFC for their statement and reminded the film makers of ‘Pathaan’ that their film will have a role in influencing real life events “Reel life has an effect on real life,” he said.
The song features a sequence where actress Deepika Padukone is seen wearing an orange swimsuit, while actor Shah Rukh Khan is wearing a green shirt. Hindu clerics wear saffron robes while green is generally regarded as a colour associated with Islam.
Previously, Hindu seer Mahant Paramhans Acharya threatened to burn Khan alive and said he will set fire theaters which will play the movie.
